Ryerson Skate Training

Ryerson Skate Training and Ryerson Hockey Development are committed to delivering a multifaceted hockey program that focuses on developing the whole athlete while providing an enriched sport experience. We offer a wide variety of services focused on making your individual player, team and league or association the best they can be. We have created specific programming based on a progressive curriculum for both our On-Ice and BLADE treadmill areas for our Ryerson Skate Training and Hockey Development athletes. Programming focuses on managing volume and intensity aimed to achieve your athlete's’ peak performance.

We also offer a program for those that are new to skating or hockey in our Learn to Skate program that is catered for those who have either never been on the ice or skated before, to those that are not quite comfortable to go out on their own, or to those who just need a tune up. Our controlled training environment and trained instructors allows our Ryerson Skate Training program the ability to make a comfortable and progressive learning space.

BLADE Skating Treadmill

The BLADE Skating Treadmill is a treadmill body that has installed synthetic ice on a rotating slat belt instead of a running surface, allowing for a smooth and easy transition that feels exactly like gliding on ice. The athlete wears a lightweight harness that attaches to the frame surrounding the treadmill surface, allowing the skater to exit on and off the treadmill easily and safely.

Some of the features of training at Ryerson Skate Training powered by the BLADE Skating Treadmill are:

  • 12’ by 6’ Rotating slat belt surface
  • Built in elevation system in the BLADE Skating Treadmill
  • Measurement of time and distance
  • Treadmill speed reaches 20 MPH
  • Treadmill elevation reaches 35 degrees
  • 360 Degree rope and rotator system
  • Singing Rock safety harness
  • Remote control descending Sport Screen Goalie for shooting

What are the benefits of using the BLADE Skating Treadmill?

  • Speed improvement through the use of our hill training acceleration program
  • Increases power and promotes quick acceleration and foot speed
  • Stride enhancement – long, explosive, and efficient strides
  • Backwards skating on the BLADE allows for pivoting with ease, edge control, and maintaining proper body position while skating
  • Increases cardiovascular intake (both anaerobic and aerobic)
  • Overall improvement of skating mechanics
  • Enhances all around hockey skills - stickhandling, ability to move the puck faster, puck control and shooting

Why train here?
The Ryerson Skate Training program, powered by the BLADE is hockey training for any level of skater/hockey player. The BLADE Skating Treadmill allows a controlled environment with one on one instruction for athletes looking to improve their stride and efficiency, along with improving endurance and overall hockey skills. Treadmill training is proven to be effective with the work the athlete puts in. You will see major changes in a short period of time.

Who can train at Ryerson Skate Training?
Anyone can! From youth to adults, beginners to professional athletes. Ryerson Skate Training powered by the BLADE, caters their programs to fit the needs of any athlete. We also offer team programs, small group training, as well as individual training sessions with 1- 4 people who share similar goals. We have devised a program that whether you are on the treadmill alone or on with 3 others, the work to rest ratio remains the same.

BLADE Treadmill Programs

Ryerson Skate Training - BLADE Treadmill Program
The Blade Skate Treadmill program consists of a Learn to Skate program, a Skate Training program, a High Performance program, and a Goaltender program. Each program consists of an evaluation session where the skater in is assessed and then placed into a specific program to cater their individual needs. Each skater has the ability to move into different programs and increase difficulty depending on their progress. With over 150 phased programs offered, there is a program for every skater and the opportunity for everyone to develop into a strong and confident skater.

Learn to Skate (Beginner & Intermediate)
The Learn to Skate program is for people of all ages and will focus on orientation to the treadmill skating surface and skating techniques. The participants will advance through a progression system of completing certain skills and getting more comfortable on the treadmill skating surface. As their technique becomes more natural and ability increases, they will see tremendous results in their skating ability and on-ice game. The Learn to Skate program isn't just for hockey players, it can also be beneficial for those that are just learning how to skate and might be tentative to start on an ice surface.

Skate Training (Beginner & Intermediate)
The Skate Training Program is a unique program offered to various age groups that allows skaters to work on their skating skills away from the rink with one on one instruction while they are on the BLADE treadmill. The Skate Training program also allows skaters to work on puck handling, passing and even shooting while striding and training on the treadmill. The training program itself is designed in a progression format.  Depending on skill level, the program for the individual skater (or if they are training with group/teammates) is catered to their needs and progression time.

High Performance
The high performance program is designed for elite athletes with highly advanced skating technique, treadmill experience, and excellent cardiovascular conditioning. This program consists of highly intensive interval and speed training, core stability using medicine balls, and technical skating maneuvers while stick handling.

Goaltender
The Goaltender program will focus on the techniques and training avenues specific to goaltender needs. Goalies move differently; their power comes from different areas, and they have different areas of energy than forwards/defense do. The Goaltenders program will focus on the basic training movements for goalies while skating on the treadmill. It will focus work on their stride development, along with leg strength, power pushes, and increasing their reaction time by completing the drills on a step by step phase outlined in their specific progressive program.

Team and/or Association Evaluation Sessions

Ryerson Skate Training and Ryerson Hockey Development has designed an evaluation system where we provide a full evaluation of players for either associations or specific teams in any stream i.e. Competitive, House league or Select. These sessions encompass on-ice tryout or evaluation sessions, scores and evaluations of each player, and a ranking list of all players evaluated.

What is included?

A complete package of evaluations, comments, and a ranking list of all players assessed.

  • On-Ice Instruction – Practice plans will be developed and executed by Ryerson Hockey Development staff in the allotted ice time provided by the association. Players will be put through a series of technical skills and individual tactic drills to allow a proper evaluation to occur.

  • Evaluation – The Evaluation Levels will be used as a guide to provide an evaluation of each player. The evaluators will be responsible for providing a score for each player, and comments/feedback for each player. The notes will be used to comment on the sub-categories mentioned below.

  • Ranking list – A ranking list will be provided to the association one week from date of last session. The ranking list will simply be a list of all of the players starting with the highest scores and proceeding to the players with the lowest scores. The comments will provide a more detailed look at each skater individually and bring context to the ranking list.
